What is the difference between 'born digital' documents and digitized documents?

'Born digital' documents are documents that were digital since their creation. Examples of this are e-mails and spreadsheets. But also invoices are often first calculated and recorded digitally before they are printed and sent.

Digitized documents are paper documents that are digitized later. An example of this is a paper letter with a request for a permit that arrives at an organization in the 'old fashioned' way via the post.

What is for one organization a born digital document, for example a sales invoice, is for the receiving organization initially a paper version, which is later scanned and digitized. By setting up a chain automation process, organizations attempt to make agreements on how digital documents can be exchanged between them.
